A watch caseback is more than the surface nobody sees. It closes the watch, compresses a gasket and carries your logo, serial number and care information. When buyers compare watch caseback types, judge the closure and marking method by the watch, market and service plan—not by appearance alone.
Decide the caseback before the sample is built. A late change can affect case height, movement clearance, gasket selection, artwork and water-resistance testing. A custom watch case back is a complete construction, not a decoration added at the end.
What each watch caseback type is for

“Engraved” describes the marking on a solid back; “press-fit” or “screw-down” describes how it closes. Keep those terms separate in the specification.
| Construction | What the buyer gets | Best fit | What changes in the build |
|---|---|---|---|
| Press-fit solid back | A continuous metal back with room for logo, serial and small print. | Clean-value models where the reverse is mainly a brand surface. | A controlled press seat and correct closing tool; check the gasket after closure. |
| Screw-down solid back | A reopenable metal closure with a broad engraving area. | Projects needing repeat opening, inspection or after-sales service. | Thread quality, gasket compression and correct re-closing enter assembly and QC. |
| Sapphire display back | A visible movement, with branding on the surrounding metal. | Products where movement finishing supports the value proposition. | A crystal, retaining ring, extra seals and movement clearance must fit the case. |
No row is automatically more premium. A solid back can feel restrained and substantial; a display can expose an ordinary movement. Match the construction to the price positioning and service plan, then test the assembled watch.
Engraved watch case backs: make the artwork producible
An engraved case back succeeds when the artwork suits the process. Laser marking and mechanical engraving do not reproduce every font, hairline or gradient equally. A detailed social-media logo can disappear at 15 mm wide on curved metal.
- Send vector artwork with fonts, weights and spacing.
- Set minimum line widths and type sizes before proof approval.
- Separate fixed artwork from variable data such as model and serial.
- Define position and orientation relative to crown, lugs and gasket.
- Approve the finished mark, because polishing or coating changes contrast.
State how deep the mark may go, how close it can sit to the gasket seat, and whether it is decorative or permanent variable data. A printed certification logo is not proof of certification; certificate scope and authorisation are handled separately.
Sapphire display backs: what changes in the build
A sapphire display is a window assembly, not a hole in metal. The crystal needs a clean sealing surface, the retaining ring must hold it without distortion, and the case needs movement clearance. Each extra interface must be inspected.
Start with what the wearer will see. A decorated automatic movement may justify a display; a basic quartz movement often will not. Confirm the purchased movement’s appearance and dimensions early. Keep engraving on the metal surround so it stays crisp and clear of the window.
The display is also a service decision. When the movement or battery needs attention, the watch opens from the rear. Replace the gasket according to the service plan rather than reusing one because it looks intact. A screw-down solid back follows the same rule.
How to specify a custom watch case back
A complete caseback brief prevents avoidable samples and approval loops. Include the following points in the watch specification:
- Construction — press-fit solid, screw-down solid or sapphire display.
- Material and finish — case metal, surface finish and colour reference.
- Marking method — laser marking or engraving, with artwork and line-weight rules.
- Variable data — model, serial, personalisation and where each value belongs.
- Crystal and clearance — for a display back, define the crystal and the movement/rotor clearance.
- Water-resistance requirement — target rating, test method and record responsibility.
- Approval sample — inspect the final-size mark after finishing and test the assembled watch.
Compare existing constructions in the watch catalogue and see the route from drawing to production on our OEM and ODM services page. Buyers can review the factory page before arranging a visit.
We make our watch cases and own the case tooling in Guangzhou; movements, straps and packaging are purchased from specialist suppliers and checked to the project specification. Full customisation starts at 300 pcs per model; an existing reference with only the dial logo changed starts at 200 pcs. Samples normally take 15–20 days, followed by 30–45 days for production after approval. Send the construction, artwork, movement choice and water-resistance target together so the sample reflects the product you intend to sell.
